PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL – The field for the 2015 Honda Classic is the best in the modern day history of the tournament.
Sixteen of the top 25 players in the world have entered the February 23-March 1 PGA TOUR event at PGA National Resort & Spa. The previous best field was in 2014 when 13 of the top 25 were entered.
The list includes world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia (7), Justin Rose (8), U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer (11), Rickie Fowler (12) Hideki Matsuyama (14), Patrick Reed (15), Victor Dubuisson (16), Billy Horschel (17), Phil Mickelson (18), Brooks Koepka (19), Graeme McDowell (20), Dustin Johnson (21), Zach Johnson (22), Chris Kirk (23), and Jamie Donaldson (25).
Other top 50 players in the field are Lee Westwood (27), Ryan Palmer (29), Charl Schwartzel (30), Stephen Gallacher (32), Joost Luiten (34), Ian Poulter (35), Keegan Bradley (37), Thomas Bjorn (44), Luke Donald (46), Louis Oosthuizen (47), Marc Leishman and and Jason Dufner (tied for 49).
Several former Honda Champions will also play including defending champion Russell Henley, Stuart Appleby (1997), Luke Donald (2006), Ernie Els (2008), Padraig Harrington (2005), Dudley Hart (2000), Rory Sabbatini (2011), Vijay Singh (1999), Michael Thompson (2013), Camilo Villegas (2010), Mark Wilson (2207) and Y.E. Yang (2009).
“I think the word continues to spread around the PGA TOUR that this is a special event that kicks off the Florida swing,” Honda Classic Executive Director Kenneth R. Kennerly said. “Each year more players are deciding to come and be a part of it.
“The quality of this field is a continued endorsement of what we have done with this event over the past eight years. We are proud that the leading players in the world love playing here and think they will enjoy the re-grassed fairways and other improvements that have been implemented by Jack Nicklaus and PGA National this year. It should be a great week.”
The 2015 Honda Classic will be played February 23-March 1, 2015 with Russell Henley defending his title. The Honda awarded a record $2.55 million in charitable contributions in 2014, the eighth straight year the event has increased its charitable distribution to South Florida Children’s Charities. The tournament also attracted 193,052 confirmed spectators between Tuesday’s practice round and Sunday’s dramatic finish that saw Henley prevail in a four-man playoff over Rory McIlroy, Ryan Palmer and Russell Knox.
